Yiaga Africa, IPC partner media on electoral reform agenda

Date:

Civil society organisations under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme will hold a consultative roundtable with media stakeholders to discuss the Citizens’ Memorandum on Electoral Reform.

The consultative meeting will take place in Abuja on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The initiative, led by Yiaga Africa in collaboration with the International Press Centre (IPC), seeks to address key challenges in Nigeria’s democracy, including weak internal party democracy, the rising cost of politics, and gaps in electoral inclusion and transparency.

The memorandum outlines priority reforms such as “strengthening the independence and neutrality of INEC,” “introducing early and diaspora voting for greater inclusion,” “enhancing transparency in result collation and transmission,” “promoting internal party democracy and curbing money politics,” and “ensuring timely prosecution of electoral offenses.”

Lanre Arogundade, IPC ExecutiveDirector, emphasised the role of the media, noting their capacity as “agenda setters, influential voices, editors, columnists, producers, presenters and programme hosts in shaping public discourse, mobilising citizens, and placing pressure on institutions to take action.”
