Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared support for the eventual presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 general elections, urging Nigerians—particularly residents of Rivers State—to register with the party.
Speaking to his supporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Amaechi emphasized that opposition coalition leaders are united in backing whoever emerges from the ADC’s presidential primary. “The moment anybody emerges from the primary, all of us will support. That’s the agreement. We insist on a free, fair, and transparent primary,” he stated.
Amaechi, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the worsening economic hardship, citing high electricity costs and widespread hunger. “If you’re not tired of President Tinubu, I am. If you’re not hungry, I am,” he said.
He urged residents of Rivers State to rally behind the ADC, saying, “Every Rivers man who thinks good of the state and country should register with the new party to remove the current government and stop the hunger.”
The ADC, also reacting on Wednesday, accused the Tinubu administration of failing to implement policies that ease the burden on ordinary Nigerians, further adding to public dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, former Jigawa State Governor and PDP chieftain, Sule Lamido, said he is open to supporting efforts to secure Nigeria in 2027, whether within or outside the PDP. However, he clarified he would not join any coalition or be part of the ADC.
Amaechi’s call marks a significant political shift, as the opposition seeks to build a credible alternative ahead of the next general election.
