The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to securing justice for the late photojournalist, Ayo Aiyepeku, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances after being declared missing.
A statement released on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, revealed that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has ordered security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into Aiyepeku’s killing.
“Justice may not bring the dead back to life, but it will console the family of the deceased that their son did not die in vain,” the statement read. “The safety and security of our people remain a top priority. The government will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice.”
Aiyepeku, 26, an indigene of Ekinrin-Adde in Ijumu Local Government Area, was reportedly lured and killed by a correctional service officer identified as Adebayo Pelumi. His decomposing body was found in a bush near the Crusher axis on the outskirts of Lokoja after days of intense search efforts.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly fled the scene with Ayo’s body, prompting a manhunt by law enforcement. The case took a chilling turn when the body of the prime suspect, Adebayo, was later found in a hotel in Lokoja, with evidence suggesting suicide. A bottle of poison and a handwritten note were allegedly discovered at the scene.
Authorities said both corpses were recovered and deposited at the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja as investigations continue into the motive and surrounding circumstances of the tragedy.
Fanwo called on the public to remain vigilant and assist security agencies with credible information that could aid the ongoing investigation. He emphasized the government’s resolve to ensure justice prevails.
