D’Tigress advance to AfroBasket semi-finals

Date:

Defending champions Nigeria D’Tigress stormed into the semi-finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket with a dominant 83–47 win over Cameroon on Thursday night in Abidjan.

The six-time African champions will now face Senegal in the next stage of the competition.

Despite a quick 4–0 start from Cameroon, Nigeria quickly responded with a 7–0 run and never looked back. Led by Coach Rena Wakama, the D’Tigress overwhelmed their fatigued opponents, who were coming off a late-night win over Angola in the qualification round.

By halftime, Nigeria held a commanding 36–18 lead, with forward Amy Okonkwo leading the charge with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Okonkwo finished the game with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist.

Off the bench, Victoria Macaulay provided an effective inside presence, adding 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal. Ezinne Kalu controlled the tempo with 5 assists, while Nicole Enabosi contributed 12 points and Elizabeth Balogun added 11 points and 5 rebounds.

By the end of the third quarter, Nigeria had stretched the lead to 66–31, effectively sealing the win.

With the victory, D’Tigress and the other three semi-finalists—Mali, Senegal, and South Sudan—have secured places in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 qualifying tournaments, scheduled for March 2026.

The four African nations will join 20 other teams from around the world, including Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Colombia, in the global qualifiers
