Tinubu extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s tenure by one year

Date:

Bashir Adewale Adeniyi

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, extending his tenure until August 2026.

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The extension, according to the statement, is intended to give Adeniyi more time to consolidate ongoing reforms and oversee the completion of major initiatives aligned with the Tinubu administration’s trade and economic agenda.

These initiatives include the modernisation of the Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project to streamline trade processes, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement said, adding that the President believes the extension will bolster the Customs Service’s capacity to facilitate trade, generate revenue, and enhance border security.

Adeniyi was first appointed in an acting capacity in June 2023 following the departure of former Comptroller-General Hameed Ali. He was confirmed in October 2023. His initial tenure was due to end in August 2025.

With this extension, Adeniyi is expected to remain in office until August 2026.
