Barcelona in talks to send Inigo Martinez to Al Nassr

Date:

Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez is in advanced talks to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, according to ESPN.

The 34-year-old centre-back, whose contract with the LaLiga champions runs until June 2026, is reportedly being allowed to leave on a free transfer. Although the move would not bring in a transfer fee, it would ease the club’s wage burden and free up room to register new signings.

Martinez had turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia last summer after being convinced to stay by Barcelona sporting director Deco. However, with the club still struggling to comply with LaLiga’s 1-1 financial rule, officials now see his departure as an opportunity to free up salary space.

Reports indicate that 60% of Martinez’s current wages could be reallocated to register incoming players. With just nine days before the start of the new LaLiga season, Barcelona have yet to register Joan García, Wojciech Szczesny, Marcus Rashford, Gerard Martín, and Marc Bernal.

Martinez joined Barcelona in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer from Athletic Club but has faced increased competition for a starting spot.
