The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), is set to train Mathematics and Science teachers across the state’s 16 local government areas under the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) programme.

The 12-day training, approved by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is scheduled to run from September 1 to 12, 2025. According to the Chairman of KWSUBEB, Professor Shehu Raheem Adaramaja, 790 teachers have been selected to participate in the capacity-building exercise.

Speaking in Ilorin on Tuesday, Adaramaja described the programme as a milestone in improving teaching quality at the basic education level. He noted that building teacher capacity at the foundational stage of learning is key to securing better outcomes for pupils.

“This training will further strengthen our teachers’ skills and enhance their classroom performance. The state government strongly believes that quality training for teachers at the foundation level will translate into a stronger learning foundation for pupils,” he said.

The training will focus on three modules: SMASE core teachers’ cycle IV training, local cycle IV, and step training with the board. Sessions will hold at Bishop Smith and Queen Elizabeth schools in Ilorin, as well as at various Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) centres across the state.

Professor Adaramaja also announced plans for an additional training programme targeting 795 teachers, with a focus on productivity in software development, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continuous investment in teacher professional development as part of its broader education reform agenda.
