Former Deputy Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adesegun AbdelMajid Adekoya, has called on residents of Ogun State to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking at a community gathering over the weekend, Adekoya stressed that active participation in the electoral process is vital for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. He urged not only new registrants to sign up but also existing voters to verify that their information is accurate and up to date.
“Your vote is not just a piece of paper; it is your voice, your right, and your power,” he said, emphasizing the need for citizens to correct any discrepancies that might prevent them from voting in future elections.
The INEC voter registration exercise, which began nationwide on August 25, 2025, is aimed at enrolling new voters and updating the records of existing ones ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adekoya, who previously represented Ijebu North/Ijebu-East/Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, appealed to community leaders to mobilize their members, describing voter registration as a collective responsibility. “We must ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to voice their opinions through their votes,” he said.
He also directed his message to young Nigerians, encouraging them to play an active role in shaping the country’s political future. “The future belongs to you. It is vital that you engage in the democratic process, not just by voting but by holding your leaders accountable,” he told the audience, urging youths to educate their peers about the importance of registration.
Adekoya, a philanthropist and promoter of the PAM Foundation—a non-governmental organization focused on youth, women, and community development—concluded by reminding citizens that meaningful change is only possible through participation. “We can only effect change if we participate in the process. Your vote is your power, and it matters,” he said.
