At least 15 people have been killed and 16 others injured after a tourist bus plunged nearly 300 metres (1,000 feet) in Sri Lanka’s mountainous Ella region, police confirmed on Friday.

The accident occurred late Thursday when the vehicle, carrying local holidaymakers returning from the tea plantation hill towns, collided with another vehicle before breaking through roadside barriers and plunging into a ravine.

Authorities described it as the deadliest road crash since May, when 23 passengers died in Kotmale. Sri Lanka records an average of 3,000 road deaths annually, with its winding mountain roads considered among the most hazardous in the world.
