Abia State Introduces Subsidised Fares for Green Shuttle Service

Date:

The Abia State Government has transitioned its previously free Green Shuttle mass transit service into a paid system, introducing a 50 percent fare subsidy to keep transportation affordable for residents. Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, announced the change on Monday after a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.

The new arrangement took effect on March 1, 2026, and was implemented to ensure the sustainability and smooth operation of the shuttle service. Kanu emphasized that the move was necessary to maintain a reliable transport scheme while continuing to serve the public effectively.

Commuters will now pay the subsidised fares using the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment card linked to the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN). Registration agents have been deployed to major bus terminals and shelters across Umuahia and Aba to assist residents in obtaining the card and gaining seamless access to the shuttle service.

Between December 24, 2025, and March 8, 2026, when the shuttle service was largely free, over 202,000 passengers reportedly benefited from the programme. The introduction of the subsidised fares aims to continue this service while ensuring the financial sustainability of the scheme.

Kanu reiterated that the government remains committed to providing residents with reliable, affordable public transportation across Abia State. He assured that the subsidy would help maintain the programme and support ongoing improvements to the Green Shuttle system.
