Police Detain NYSC Officer in Connection with Corps Member Death

Date:

The Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South Local Government, Abass Olalekan, has been arrested following the death of a female NYSC member, Victoria Ariyo, on Tuesday. Ariyo reportedly died from complications arising from a terminated pregnancy.

Reports indicate that Olalekan verbally announced Ariyo’s death and organised her burial at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta. Sources allege that the LGI was romantically involved with Ariyo, a relationship that led to her pregnancy and subsequent complications.

Ariyo’s death follows closely on the heels of another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who died under mysterious circumstances while serving in the same local government area. Mary had been attached to Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

Police confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, stating he is in custody at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Ariyo’s death, though police spokespeople have declined to provide details on the alleged involvement of the LGI.

DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that the case is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, assuring that inquiries are ongoing while urging patience as the probe continues.
