The Igbo Community Association (ICA) in Abuja has strongly condemned the attempted coronation of an “Ezeigbo” in South Africa, calling the move illegal and warning that it could spark tensions between Igbo diaspora communities and their host countries. The association described the coronation as undermining established Igbo traditional institutions and risking hostility against Nigerians abroad.

In a statement signed by President General Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Secretary General Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah, the ICA expressed concern that the event had already triggered near-xenophobic reactions in parts of South Africa. The group also criticised the organisers, saying their actions bring “continued embarrassment” to the Igbo people and Nigerians generally.

The association noted that the South East Traditional Council and Ohanaeze Ndigbo had previously prohibited the enthronement of “Ezeigbo” in foreign countries. ICA FCT emphasized that such coronations jeopardise the safety and reputation of millions of Igbo living in diaspora communities.

Citing past diplomatic tensions involving Igbo diaspora leadership in Ghana, the group urged Nigerian and international security agencies to intervene. It called for the arrest and prosecution of anyone claiming the “Ezeigbo” title abroad to prevent similar incidents and maintain community cohesion.

The ICA stressed that preserving Igbo heritage requires strict adherence to directives from traditional authorities in Nigeria’s South-East and respect for host country laws. The statement highlights increasing scrutiny of diaspora leadership titles and their implications for diplomatic relations, security, and the welfare of Nigerians abroad.
