Cleric Cautions Politicians on Religion Ahead of Elections

Date:

A faith-based organisation, the Academic of Islamic Propagation (ACADIP), has cautioned political actors against the use of religion as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.

The warning was issued by the group’s founder, Yusuf Adepoju during an event held in Ede on Sunday.

Adepoju said the introduction of religious sentiments into political campaigns could deepen divisions among citizens and weaken national unity, urging politicians to focus instead on issue-based engagement.

“Politicians must avoid dragging religion into their ambitions, as doing so can create unnecessary tension and weaken the bonds that hold our society together,” he said.

He stressed that campaign promises should be treated as binding commitments, adding that political leaders must demonstrate sincerity and accountability in fulfilling them.

“Campaign promises should not be treated lightly; they are obligations that leaders owe the people,” he added.

Adepoju also urged voters to make informed decisions during elections by prioritising candidates with integrity and a track record of public service, rather than emotional or religious considerations.

“The electorate must look beyond sentiments and choose individuals who demonstrate honesty, accountability and a genuine desire to serve,” he said.

He further reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence, noting that his traditional title would be used to advance unity and religious understanding within communities.
