The Federal Government has urged closer collaboration among the media, government institutions, and other stakeholders to tackle the rising spread of misinformation and disinformation in the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call on Monday in Abuja during the commemoration of this year’s World Press Freedom Day at the Radio House.
Idris said the current administration has prioritised partnerships with media organisations and international bodies to promote responsible journalism and counter false information.
“This administration has prioritised collaboration with media stakeholders and international partners to promote responsible journalism, counter disinformation and misinformation,” he said.
He stressed that collective effort is essential to protect public trust, strengthen national stability, and safeguard democratic institutions. According to him, press freedom remains a fundamental constitutional right, and the government is committed to ensuring journalists operate freely, safely, and responsibly.
The minister also condemned any form of intimidation or attacks against journalists, warning that such actions undermine democracy.
“We condemn all forms of intimidation, unlawful harassment, or attacks against journalists. A media environment where journalists feel unsafe ultimately weakens democracy itself,” he said.
Idris noted that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken steps to improve transparency and access to information through the Freedom of Information Act and expanded public communication platforms.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO in establishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) in Abuja as part of efforts to equip citizens with skills to critically assess information and promote responsible communication in the digital age.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Binyerem Ukaire, said the rapidly evolving digital information space requires stronger institutional coordination to address misinformation and rebuild public trust.
She added that the ministry remains committed to fostering dialogue, strengthening partnerships, and promoting professionalism in the media sector.
The event was attended by representatives of key security and media institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Press Council, alongside UNESCO officials.
