President Muhammadu Buhari says he shares in the joy of celebration with former Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Umaru Shehu, on his 92nd birthday, Dec. 8.
The president, in a congratulatory message issued by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, on Thursday in Abuja, rejoiced with the renowned scholar for a life of service to God, country and humanity.
Buhari affirmed that Shehu, a professor of medicine, who served the country in many capacities, exemplifies humility, capacity and diligence, qualities that had continually placed him on global demand for leadership, especially in educational development.
The president extolled Shehu’s perseverance, resilience and discipline in dedicating his time and talent to pursuing a better health system through teaching, research and publications, and accepting leadership responsibilities that have galvanised many institutions.
Buhari noted Shehu’s preference for serving the country, and willingness to inspire a new generation of scholars and leaders.
The president prayed for grace of more strength and good health for the scholar, medical doctor and administrator.
In a similar development, President Buhari rejoiced with former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, on his 60th birthday, Dec. 9, celebrating with the former Governor of Akwa Ibom for giant strides in leadership and service to the nation.
The president joined members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in serenading the party chieftain.
He stated Akpabio’s visionary style of leadership had continued to inspire and outstand, starting from his state, where he led for eight years, and changed the landscape, turning it into a national and global reference for social, economic and infrastructural development.
President Buhari noted the contributions of Akpabio to the political developments in the country.
Akpabio had served as Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources; Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Lands and Housing, before being elected Governor in 2007, and consistently remaining vocal and vibrant, especially as Senate Minority Leader.
The president congratulated the former governor and prominent leader of the South-South for his efforts in promoting the wellbeing of his people, and maintaining a healthy relationship for peace and understanding at the national level.
He prayed that the Almighty God would bless Akpabio and his family with longer life, good health and prosperity.
