A non-gvernmental organsation, NGO, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, has commended the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede and his team for confronting another ‘monster’ in examination process which it believe would soon enhance the nation’s education system.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, MMWG, noted that the Board under Oloyede has restored credibility into the nation’s education system, especially with the huge revenues generated within a short period in office.
Abdullahi said the nation was astonished about the huge revenues lost under the watch of previous Registrars when Oloyede, shortly after his appointment paid directly billions of Naira into the coffers of federal government being revenue generated from examination fees of students.
“JAMB in its characteristics since Professor Ishaq Oloyede took over as the Registrar, noted there were several ways in which some students and their collaborators including some parents and cyber cafe operators, commit examination malpractices.
“Having been in academics for over three decades including serving as a Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, he decided to confront the problems of examination malpractices in various ways. This accounts for several reforms in its examination process this year.
“We are therefore surprised that some people are criticising him for the delay in the release of examination results. Hitherto, results are posted to students shortly after writing the same day.
“That JAMB decided to correct lapses in its examination process should attract commendation rather than condemnation. What is the essence of releasing fraudulent results promptly only to discover that some candidates and stakeholders have manipulated the examinations to favour some students?” he stressed.
Abdullahi therefore sought the full support of Nigerians for the Board to succeed in its new examination process so that problems confronting quality of education in the country could be solved.
“Those wondering about the quality of education in Nigeria, must now be interested in what JAMB is doing, as it will reduce to the barest minimum the cases of educationally poor students gaining admissions to our universities”, he stated.
He noted that the reform introduced by JAMB would improve quality of education in the country if private universities are made to follow the standard just evolved by the Board.
