A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ekiti State, Apostle Ayodele David-Adesua, has condemned Tuesday’s attack on the party’s state secretariat in Ado Ekiti, describing it as a desperate attempt to intimidate opposition voices.
Hoodlums reportedly set fire to the newly established ADC secretariat, vandalised property, and assaulted party members during the inauguration of the party’s executives across the state.
In a statement released on Wednesday, David-Adesua denounced the incident as “a barbaric act of political cowardice,” stressing that the attack targeted not just the party but the democratic aspirations of Ekiti people.
“This attack is not merely against a building, but against the democratic will of the people who seek freedom from tyranny and misrule,” he said. “No amount of destruction will break our resolve. From these ashes, we shall rescue, rebuild, and rise stronger.”
The ADC aspirant vowed that the party would not be deterred by “agents of oppression or internal saboteurs,” pledging to continue championing truth, justice, and good governance.
“Together, we will rebuild what has been destroyed, rekindle hope, and reclaim Ekiti’s destiny. With resilience and unity, Ekiti shall rise again,” he added.
Former Minister of Interior and ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, who was in the state for the inauguration, also condemned the attack, calling it “a shameful display of intolerance and a dangerous threat to democracy.”
Aregbesola noted that democracy thrives on freedom of association and political participation without intimidation, warning that such violence could push the state toward “a descent into fascism.”
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed it has launched an investigation into the attack, assuring that those responsible will be apprehended and prosecuted.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Ekiti State governorship election for June 20, 2026.
