The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, had assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Transportation under his watch make a meaningful, optimized improvement in the public sector transportation.
Alkali, gave the assurance when he assumed duty in Abuja, adding that there would be effective collaboration between relevant and related ministries, agencies, corporate entities in order to ensure a rejuvinated and sustained road transport and mass transit operations across the country.
This he said would be done via effective supervision, monitoring and evaluation of performance of all the departments of the Ministry and its agencies, to meet operational standard, judicious expenditure management and optimal productivity.
“As you are aware, the Ministry of Transportation was primarily established to facilitate the provision of public transport services and effective coordination of all the agencies and institutions under the Ministry.
“The Ministry of Transportation shall strive to ensure the realisation of its mandate and the mandates of agencies under its jurisdiction. This endeavour will assist to harness the resources of the nation, promote national prosperity and dynamic self-reliant economy
that will actualise the “Renewed Hope” of the present administration.”
Alkali explained that the Ministry would take the front seat in the public transportation sector by giving support to policies that are tailored towards providing democratic dividends to Nigerians, through provision secured, affordable and convenient public transport system across the country.
The Minister maintained that the Ministry remaind among the few ministries that were established from colonial period to date with little modification to its name given its place as a strategic gateway to the nation’s economy, especially as the Ministry is undergoing restructuring in response to emerging national economic challenges that required the services of the transport sector.
The Minister therefore promised to understudy prevailing economic trends, to bring about provision, modernisation, rehabilitation, planning and development of the rail transport sector with efficient security services that supports the realisation Ministry’s mandate and the current administration’s mandate.
