APC chieftain dies in Bayelsa boat mishap
A leading chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Media & Publicity Director of the Bayelsa State Governorship Campaign Council, Mr Peremobowei Tukuwei, has died in a boat mishap.
DAILY INDEPENDENT gathered that the tragic incident occurred when the party’s campaign team was visiting Okoroma in the Nembe Local Government Area en route Ogbia town in the Ogbia LGA, on Wednesday.
Tukuwei, also known as Perry, according to sources, was the only one who did not survive the accident among the occupants of the ill-fated boat.
His corpse was found in the late hours of Thursday after a long collaborative search by marine search parties and relevant authorities, it was learnt.
Tukuwei, who was from the Ekeremor LGA of the state, was working with the Africa Independent Television (AIT) before he was appointed to serve as the media and publicity director of the state APC campaign council for the forthcoming governorship election scheduled for November 11, 2023.
Already, the state APC chairman, Dennis Otiotio, had announced the suspension of campaigns by the council on Thursday.
The statement read, “The Bayelsa State APC Governorship Campaign Council wish to announce the suspension of our campaigns billed to hold tomorrow 26 October 2023 at Nembe-Ogbolomabiri and Nembe-Bassambiri.
“This is due to an unfortunate boat mishap during our campaigns today. At the moment, a ranking member of staff of our Campaign Council is yet to be accounted for. We have informed relevant authorities and search parties are on top of the situation.
“We will take a day’s break to evaluate the situation before we resume our campaigns on Friday at Ogbolomabiri and Bassambiri before heading to Brass on Saturday and Sunday to conclude the Bayelsa East Campaigns.”
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign Council has commiserated with the state APC following the tragic boat incident that resulted in the death of its media and publicity director, Peremobowei Tukuwei.
A statement signed by its chairman of publicity directorate, Ayibaina Duba, on Friday, said the PDP campaign council also condoled with the management and staff of the AIT over the loss of Tukuwei.
It equally extended its condolences to the Tukuwei family of Ndoro community in the Ekeremor LGA, noting that the state had lost a young man with great potential.
The PDP family while expressing shock over the tragic loss of the APC campaign media director, described him as brilliant and resourceful.
It said, “We see how passionately he discharged his media assignments on AIT and during the APC campaigns. It is therefore painful to lose such a brilliant and intellectually sound young man. It is indeed sad that Peremobowei Tukuwei departed at a time he was just beginning to flourish.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the Tukuwei family, the Africa Independent Television and indeed the All Progressives Congress over this unfortunate incident. We pray that the Lord grants his family, his media and political colleagues and associates the fortitude to bear this loss.”
