Former Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Dr Babatunde Salami has defected from All Progressives Congress (APC) to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Salami announced his official defection in Ilorin on Wednesday alongside his political associates and supporters that cut across all 18 wards in Ifelodun Local Government.

He said the decision to dump APC for PDP was premised on inability of APC to properly organize itself due to lack of unifying leadership.

According to him “APC is not organized in the state. There are a lot of intra-party crisis which was unable to resolve. As a result of that, I don’t think I can belong to such a system where there is no proper organization. APC is not organized because there is no leadership perse. APC has segmental head not unifiying head which consequently lead to lack of proper coordination. I left PDP because of a factor and the factor is resolved, so there is no point going to any other party than PDP.

Dr Salami described APC led government as sole administratorship system because there is no coordination between the party and the government.

“It is the party that install the government and both of them should work hand in hand. But in the case of Kwara APC, the party and the government are working in different pages.

“So, politically and economically, the situation of the state has worsened than the APC led government has met it. The situation is not palatable for citizens and as a result of that, one cannot continue with that system, we need to start a new struggle.

“The likelihood of PDP returning to power in 2023 is very certain because we have tested both sides of the coins and we have seen the better one.

“For somebody like me, I have not never been in opposition party before. So, my decision to leave PDP for APC is a political research and as a result, I believe PDP will perform better when it comes to power in 2023.

“The Governor is not making himself available to anybody. He believes there is no faction. I belong to Saraki faction in APC because I didn’t follow Saraki to PDP. The Governor met us in APC and he is not even ready to reckon with us. Even, those people that came together with him, he didn’t reckon with most of them, how much more of Saraki stuff.

“So, I will say as a researcher, writer and politician that Kwara has made a wrong choice in electing this present government.

“I have never seen a situation whereby the Governor choose the Commissioner without consulting the party. He does know many people but it is the party that knows everywhere”.

In his reaction, the state Chairman of PDP, Engr. Kola Shittu described the development as a plus to PDP.

“I’m very happy to witness this and I want to say that it is not surprising because this not going to be the last. We have been receiving people decamping and we will receive more people. The party in government in the state is not doing well. So, people have seen the difference.

“The person decamping today has been one of us for a long time and I’m happy that he is able to see the difference, that is why he is coming back to us. We are very happy that he has come with his friends, associates and supporters”.

He said the chance of PDP coming to power in 2023 both at the state and national levels is very bright.

“The present Governor in the state has not been doing well maybe because he is inexperience, he is not behaving like a politician, maybe he was not prepared for the job or he didn’t expect he will win the election. He has destroyed the party that brought him in”.

The Chairman of PDP in Ifelodun Local Government, Hon Olawomo Joshua Olawale, said he was overwhelmed with the development.

According to him I am overwhelmed since the arrangement of this programme because I saw beyond the immediate. So, I know what it means for this kind of people to decamp. I know the result that will come out of it. It is going lessen our burden particularly in the areas which they cover.

“So, having realized that, it has made to be happy even before today. I am well overwhelmed and I thank God for what has happened, what is happening and what will happen”.

He said with the coming back home of Dr Babatunde Salami and his associates, PDP in Ifelodun has started regaining its lost strength.

The programme had former members of the House of Representatives, Hon Kola Yusuf and Hon Wahab Issa, former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon Babatunde Mohammed among other party leaders in attendance.
