The Inaugural Congress of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council has reaffirmed the validity of the election conducted by a committee headed by Alhaji Hammed Shittu of Thisday on Newspaper on November 1, 2025, which produced a new executive council led by Comrade Biola Azeez as Chairman.
Members of the chapel also pledged their unalloyed support to the new leadership in the discharge of its duties.
This was contained in a communiqué Issued at the end of the Inaugural Congress of the Correspondents’ Chapel on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Chapel Secretariat, Ilorin.
Congress appreciated the goodwill messages received from sister chapels under the NUJ Kwara State Council and expressed commitment to fostering a stronger and more harmonious ties within the Union.
It also expressed gratitude to the NUJ State Council leadership for sending representatives to observe the chapel’s election, describing the exercise as a demonstration of unity and maturity within the Correspondents’ Chapel.
The newly inaugurated Executive members led by its chairman Mallam Biola Azeez also re-emphasized its
commitment to prioritizing members’ welfare and safety.
In line with this, the executive members were enjoined to embark on advocacy visits and engagements with relevant security agencies and government institutions to ensure journalists’ protection and well-being.
The Congress resolved that henceforth, after each monthly meeting, the Chapel shall issue communique highlighting key resolutions and promoting best practices in journalism for the benefit of the profession and the public.
In view of this the chairman announced a three-man communiqué drafting committee headed by Alhaji Mansur Aramide of The Guardian Newspaper (chairman) Mr. Nicholas Uwerunonye of Daily Independent Newspaper (Secretary) and Miss Mosunmola Ayobami of Western Post (member).
“Commitment to Members’ Welfare and Safety:Congress resolved to prioritise the welfare and safety of members. To this end, it mandated the new executive council to embark on advocacy visits and engagements with relevant security agencies and government institutions to ensure journalists’ protection and well-being”, it read.
The Congress expressed deep sadness over the passing of veteran sports journalist, Mr. Yusuf Feruke, and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter.
