Controversy as Three Doctors Suspended Over Adichie Child Case

Date:

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has established a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct in the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following investigations into a formal complaint filed on January 16, 2026.

At its 25th investigative session in Abuja on February 17–18, 2026, the panel found prima facie evidence of negligence against three doctors — Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi (Medical Director, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital), Dr. Titus Ogundare (Anaesthesiologist, Euracare), and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh (Chief Medical Director, Atlantis Paediatric Hospital). Interim suspension orders were issued against them pending formal disciplinary proceedings.

The panel also identified alleged professional misconduct involving 10 other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, with their cases referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal for formal hearing and determination.

Medical practitioners from Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital had earlier responded to the investigation by submitting affidavits and giving oral testimony before the panel. However, the MDCN stressed that the findings remain preliminary and do not represent a final determination of liability.

The council affirmed that the affected practitioners are entitled to a full hearing before the tribunal, where evidence will be examined and final decisions rendered. It pledged transparency and adherence to regulatory procedures as further proceedings continue.
