Edo NMA Threatens Statewide Withdrawal of Medical Services Over Doctors’ Abduction

Date:

The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to withdraw medical services across the state following the abduction of doctors by suspected kidnappers. The association said the growing insecurity poses a serious threat to the lives of healthcare professionals and undermines effective healthcare delivery in Edo State.

In a statement released on Friday in Benin City, the state chairman of the NMA, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, disclosed that the withdrawal of services would commence at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026. He explained that the decision followed the kidnapping of two medical doctors between January 1 and 2, 2026.

According to the association, the incident highlights the urgent need for improved security for medical workers and residents across the state. The NMA demanded the immediate release of the remaining abducted doctor, enhanced security measures, and regular engagement between the state government and the association on security-related concerns.

The kidnapped doctors were identified as brothers, Dr. Abu Ibrahim Babatunde and Dr. Tahir Abu, who were abducted by gunmen at the gate of their residence along City Pride Road in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. While the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦200 million, Dr. Tahir Abu, a newly graduated doctor from Ambrose Alli University, was later killed, while his elder brother remains in captivity with a ransom demand of ₦100 million.

Reacting to the incident, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, described the killing as painful and deeply regrettable. He acknowledged that kidnapping has become a serious security challenge in the state but assured residents that his administration remains committed to intensifying efforts to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities.
