FAAN Announces Cash, Card Payment for Airport Toll Fees

Date:

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has modified its cashless toll policy following a directive from President Bola Tinubu, after the rollout triggered severe traffic gridlock at airports nationwide.

Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku said the president did not cancel the policy but directed a review and adoption of a hybrid approach to prevent further congestion, noting that the system must be fine-tuned before full implementation.

Kuku disclosed that over 100,000 users had registered for the payment system by March 3, with more than 60,000 sign-ups recorded within three days, acknowledging however that many motorists were caught unprepared despite earlier awareness campaigns.

She stated that the authority would first ensure the technology functions effectively and improve public enlightenment before relaunching the policy, while also taking steps to curb revenue leakages during the interim hybrid phase.

The initial cashless rollout on March 1 caused heavy traffic congestion, forcing some passengers to miss flights and disrupting businesses around airport corridors due to payment bottlenecks and vehicular buildup.
