Former All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has resigned as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), with immediate effect. His resignation, dated March 27, 2026, comes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gawuna said the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive that political appointees with electoral ambitions must step down in compliance with the Electoral Act. He emphasized that the move is in strict accordance with the law and is intended to allow him to pursue his political aspirations.

The former Deputy Governor of Kano State expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege that enabled him to contribute to the development of both the bank and the country. He also assured that he would ensure a smooth transition by handing over responsibilities in line with established procedures.

Gawuna added that he has placed his future “in the hands of Allah (SWT)” and is seeking divine guidance for his next steps. His resignation follows his earlier decision to formally resign his membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The resignation highlights the ongoing preparations by political appointees across Nigeria to comply with electoral regulations and step down from government positions ahead of upcoming elections, signaling an active start to the 2027 political season.
