Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has warned journalists against politicians he described as “latter-day activists,” accusing them of attempting to undermine Nigeria’s democracy for political gain.

Speaking during a Ramadan breaking of fast with media professionals at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Sani said democratic values are being threatened by political actors who embrace activism only when government policies do not favour them.

He urged journalists to remain vigilant and resist efforts by such politicians to manipulate public opinion or promote division through ethnicity and religion rather than focusing on development issues.

The governor recalled the critical role journalists played during Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, noting that many lost their freedom — and some their lives — while advocating for civil rule.

Sani called on the media to question the democratic credentials of political actors and hold them accountable while prioritising national unity, good governance and development over partisan rhetoric.
