Kanu’s Legal Team Urges Tinubu to End Terrorism Trial

Date:

The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the discontinuation of the terrorism charges filed against the separatist leader.

Speaking to journalists at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, Kanu’s lawyer, Maxwell Opara, urged Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation to withdraw the case, describing it as an embarrassment to the country.

“Now to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, please, as a matter of urgency, direct the Attorney General to discontinue this charge,” Opara said. “This case is embarrassing Nigeria before the world, and the more they keep applying for adjournment, it shows they don’t have a case.”

He argued that ending the trial would help address the underlying issues behind Kanu’s agitation and potentially calm tensions. “Allow the judges to discontinue this charge so that Kanu can continue with his agitation and address the issues that gave rise to it,” he added.

Opara also cautioned Tinubu against relying on aides he described as sycophants, claiming they were misleading the president and damaging his administration’s image. “Those surrounding you are deceiving you and making your government unpopular. The Attorney General will not tell you the truth — we are the ones telling you the truth,” he said.
