Leadership Tussle Rocks Plateau PDP as New Chairman Emerges

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State has been thrown into fresh crisis after a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike elected Peter Tongshep as state chairman during a parallel congress in Jos.

Tongshep emerged alongside 38 executive members at what the faction described as a peaceful consensus congress, reportedly conducted under tight security and observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The development comes amid ongoing leadership disputes within the PDP, with rival groups in Plateau State competing for control of party structures ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled in Abuja.

However, the officially recognised state chapter of the party rejected the exercise, describing reports of a fresh congress as baseless. It maintained that the current leadership under Hon. Raymond Dabo remains valid, having emerged from a duly conducted congress in October 2025.

The party further stated that the tenure of the existing executive runs until 2028 and warned against misinformation, while calling for unity among members as preparations continue for upcoming local government and general elections.
