Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday declared a state of emergency, citing what his government described as an “extremely serious military aggression” by the United States against the capital, Caracas.
Residents reported hearing multiple explosions across the city, along with sounds resembling aircraft flyovers, according to the journalist on the ground. The government did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage.
In a statement, the Venezuelan government said it “rejects, repudiates and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and people.” The United States has yet to respond to the allegation.
