MURIC Pushes for Muslim Candidates in South-West Governorship Races

Date:

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged political parties in the South-West to field Muslim candidates for governorship positions ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that it may mobilise voters against parties that fail to comply.

The group specifically demanded that Muslims should emerge as governors in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun states, while calling for Muslim deputy governors in Ekiti and Ondo, describing the move as necessary for inclusive governance in the region.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC alleged that Muslims have been politically marginalised in the South-West since 2023, claiming that most top political offices and appointments in the region are dominated by Christians.

The organisation cited examples of alleged imbalances in political appointments across several states, arguing that such disparities have affected access to government opportunities, patronage, and resources, thereby worsening socio-economic conditions for Muslims in the region.

MURIC maintained that the 2027 elections present an opportunity to correct what it described as long-standing exclusion, insisting that political parties must present Muslim candidates or risk losing the support of Muslim voters in the South-West.
