The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully evacuated 1,230 stranded Nigerians from the Republic of Niger following ongoing political instability and security concerns, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens abroad.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the evacuation took place in two batches, with 708 returnees arriving on March 23, 2026, and 522 arriving on March 29.
The operation was facilitated in partnership with national and international agencies, notably the International Organization for Migration, which provided logistical and technical support to ensure a smooth process.
Upon arrival in Kano, the returnees were received by a multi-agency team including officials from the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, alongside state and international partners.
The evacuees underwent profiling at the airport for proper documentation before being transported to the Immigration Training School in Kano for temporary accommodation, where they received meals, sanitary supplies, and basic medical care. They were subsequently discharged and reunited with their families.
The Ministry described the operation as part of the Federal Government’s broader duty to safeguard Nigerians abroad, highlighting the emphasis on humane treatment and effective reintegration of returning citizens.
The government also acknowledged the cooperation of the Nigerien authorities, which facilitated a smooth evacuation process, and praised the contributions of international partners, particularly the IOM and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Citizens abroad were advised to abide by local laws, maintain regular contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions, and register with their nearest embassy or consulate to receive timely assistance in emergencies.
