The Obidient Movement, supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, on Friday launched its campaign in support of former National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) boss, George Moghalu, ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State.
Speaking at a press conference in Awka, the group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, warned that any attempt to manipulate the upcoming poll would be “resisted through lawful and democratic means.”
Tanko, in a statement released in Abuja, said the Obidient Movement had mobilized members across all 5,720 polling units in Anambra and was fully prepared to protect the people’s mandate.
“Let it be stated unequivocally that the Obidient family is fully on ground in every part of Anambra State. We have completed the inauguration of our polling unit commanders,” he said.
He added that the group had deployed “robust mechanisms and digital technologies” to prevent electoral malpractice, declaring that “the era when results were written in back rooms is over.”
“This generation of Nigerians, this generation of Obidients, will not allow the old order of electoral malpractice to thrive again,” he stated.
Tanko urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain impartial and professional, and called on security agencies to ensure the safety of voters during the election.
He also noted that the movement’s volunteers, women, and youth groups had been trained to monitor all stages of the electoral process, from accreditation to result transmission.
“A new Anambra is possible, and together, we will make it happen,” Tanko said.
The November 8 governorship election will mark the end of Governor Charles Soludo’s first term under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Major political parties, including the Labour Party, APC, PDP, and APGA, are expected to field strong contenders in what could be one of the state’s most competitive races.
