At least 23 people were killed and 108 others injured following multiple bomb explosions across Maiduguri on Monday evening, according to the Borno State Police Command. The attacks occurred at three locations: Maiduguri Monday Market, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital gate, and the Post Office Flyover area.
Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest the incidents were carried out by suspected suicide bombers. Authorities immediately secured the scenes and conducted thorough sweeps to prevent further threats.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), evacuated victims to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment for varying injuries. Security agencies, including police tactical units and the military, were deployed to the affected areas.
Daso commiserated with victims’ families and assured the public of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Calm has reportedly returned to the city, with security presence heightened to deter additional attacks.
The explosions, which occurred around 7 p.m. during iftar, triggered panic among residents. Video footage from the scene showed security personnel inspecting vehicles and a lifeless body near one of the attack sites, highlighting the immediate human toll of the coordinated attacks.
