Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Process Against Fubara, Deputy

Date:

The political crisis in Rivers State deepened on Thursday as the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.

At a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented a notice of allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.

The notice, which was endorsed by 26 lawmakers, accused Governor Fubara of actions alleged to be in violation of provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, though specific details were not disclosed during the session.

Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice would be served on the governor within seven days, in line with constitutional requirements.

In a related development at the same sitting, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduh.

The move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political tensions in the state, setting the stage for possible further legislative action in the coming days.
