Senate okays Maritime varsity, two others

Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Delta State.

Also passed were two bills to establish the University of Technology, Auchi, Edo State; and the Federal College of Education, Giwa in Kaduna State.

The upper legislative chamber passed the three bills following a clause-by-clause consideration of the report of its Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, chaired by Senator Ahmad Baba-Kaita (APC Katsina North) during Wednesday plenary session.

While the bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Maritime University was sponsored by Senator James Manager (PDP Delta South); the other two to establish the University of Technology, Auchi; and Federal College of Education, Giwa, were separately sponsored by Senators Francis Alimikhena (APC Edo North); and Uba Sani (APC Kaduna Central), respectively.

Presenting the report, Senator Baba-Kaita said that the Federal Polytechnic Auchi was currently running degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State with enrollment of over 50, 000 students on full and part time.

He said that upgrading the institution to a federal university would provide training of high skills in the areas of technical and vocational education.

Meanwhile, the Senate yesterday also confirmed the appointment of Dr. Tella Adeniran Rahmon representing Osun State as Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC.

Also confirmed was the appointment of Engr. Usman Mahmud Hassan as Commissioner of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC.

The confirmation of both nominees followed the consideration of the reports of the Senate Committees on Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC; and National Planning and Economic Affairs.

The committees are chaired by Senators Kabiru Gaya (APC Kano South); and Olubunmi Adetumbi (APC Ekiti North).

The Senate after passing the three bills adjourned till next week Tuesday, July 21.
