Super Falcons pocket ₦1.5 BILLION after historic comeback to win 10th WAFCON title

Date:

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have cemented their place in African football history once again, pulling off a stunning 3-2 comeback against host nation Morocco to clinch their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title—and a $1 million (₦1.5 billion) prize.

In front of a roaring crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the Falcons showed grit, class, and unshakable belief. Down 2-0 at halftime after early strikes by Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy, Nigeria looked headed for heartbreak. But a second-half resurgence inspired by tactical changes from head coach Justin Madugu flipped the script.

Esther Okoronkwo sparked the comeback with a composed penalty after a Moroccan handball. Opeyemi Ijamilusi leveled the score with a clinical finish, before substitute Jennifer Echegini sealed the win with a decisive strike that silenced the home crowd and secured the Super Falcons’ “Mission X”—their quest for a record-extending 10th title.

CAF’s $1 million reward marks a 100% increase in the winner’s prize, part of a broader 45% hike in total prize money for the 2024 tournament. The Confederation also directed that 30% of Nigeria’s winnings go directly to the players.

WAFCON 2024 Prize Money Breakdown:

Champion (Nigeria): $1,000,000

Runner-Up: $500,000

Third Place: $350,000

Fourth Place: $300,000

Quarter-Finalists: $200,000 each

Third in Group: $150,000

Fourth in Group: $125,000 each

Nigeria’s latest triumph is more than just another trophy—it’s a bold statement of resilience, depth, and the enduring legacy of the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
