U.S. Condemns Jos Killings, Urges Nigeria to Strengthen Easter Security

Date:

The United States Department of State has condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attacks as unacceptable and calling on the Nigerian government to strengthen security, particularly ahead of Easter celebrations.

Mark Walker, Principal Advisor for Global Religious Freedom, urged Nigerian authorities to act swiftly, saying, “We call on the Nigerian government to significantly enhance security for Christians before and during Easter. We recognize the steps already taken by the government to improve safety, but the targeted killing of Christians, especially during religious holidays, is unacceptable. We urge Nigerian leadership to take immediate action.”

The statement follows renewed violence in Jos and surrounding communities on Palm Sunday, when gunmen reportedly targeted predominantly Christian areas, killing several residents and injuring many others.

The attacks disrupted Holy Week religious activities and heightened fear among residents. Local sources said the assailants struck in the early hours, firing sporadically and setting homes on fire, forcing many people to flee their communities.
