Yoruba Language Initiative Appoints Idris Alooma

Date:

The General Manager of UNILORIN FM, Mr. Ibrahim Akintola Idris (popularly known as Alooma), has been appointed as a key member of the Yorùbá Language Preservation Initiative’s Brain Trust in Africa.

The initiative, which targets young people aged 15 to 18 across Yorùbá-speaking regions of Nigeria, is designed to safeguard the language and cultural heritage by fostering proficiency, creativity, and cultural pride.

In a letter dated September 29, 2025, and signed by the project coordinator, Mr. Olusola Macaulay, the programme was described as a strategic response to the decline in indigenous language use among youths. According to him, the initiative will ensure Yorùbá remains vibrant and relevant for future generations.

“With Mr. Idris Alooma on board, the project is poised to make a significant impact in preserving Africa’s rich cultural heritage,” Macaulay stated.

He explained that the initiative’s objectives include promoting fluency in Yorùbá, showcasing cultural expression, and instilling a strong sense of pride in Yorùbá identity. Organizers also hope the model will inspire similar indigenous language revival projects across Nigeria and beyond.

The Brain Trust, comprising experts and cultural influencers like Idris Alooma, will provide strategic guidance through planning sessions, programme development, networking support, and quarterly reviews.

For Idris Alooma, the appointment adds to an illustrious career. In addition to managing UNILORIN FM, he serves as Deputy Director at the University of Ilorin’s Directorate of Corporate Affairs. A seasoned broadcaster with over 30 years of experience, he graduated with Second Class Upper honours from the University of Ilorin and has earned nearly 90 national and international awards, including the UNESCO Award, the World Royal Award (WORA), and the YOMAFA Global Award.
