Nigerian comedian and former Big Brother Naija housemate DeeOne has sparked controversy after claiming that about 90 per cent of protests in Nigeria are politically sponsored. He made the allegation during an appearance on Vanguard’s podcast on April 21, 2026.
DeeOne argued that many demonstrations in the country are not purely driven by citizens’ grievances but are instead influenced by powerful political interests. He said politicians often operate behind the scenes by funding or supporting protest movements to advance specific agendas.
According to him, this alleged pattern makes it difficult for Nigerians to distinguish between genuine protests and those allegedly organised for political purposes. He added that “there’s always an agenda behind most of them.”
The comments have generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users agreeing with his perspective while others strongly disagreed, insisting that many protests are driven by economic hardship and public frustration rather than political manipulation.
One social media user, @NaijaCitizenX, rejected the claim, arguing that widespread hardship, hunger, and dissatisfaction are the real drivers of protests in Nigeria, not political sponsorship.
