The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ilorin, has taken delivery of the equipment needed for the setting up of a standard Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory.

The equipment, which was donated by the International Foundation for Science, Sweden, at the instance of a grant awarded to Dr Nusirat Elelu, an Associate Professor at the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, was received on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Oyebisi Mistura Azeez, by the University’s Desk Officer on Ranking, Dr Ismail Odetokun.

Receiving the items, Prof. Azeez thanked the Sweden-based International Foundation for Science for deeming it fit to offer the University the privilege of housing such a laboratory that would enhance its service delivery as he assured stakeholders that the setting up of the laboratory would be completed swiftly for it to commence full operations.

The Dean also commended Dr Elelu for facilitating the multimillion Naira facility to the University as she explained that, with that singular act, she has written her name in gold in the annals of the Faculty and University.

Speaking to UNILORIN BULLETIN on the development, Dr Elelu said that the facility would be the first of its kind in the University and among the very few of such across the country.

She added that the laboratory would help in real time disease diagnosis, control and management among human beings and domestic animals.

Dr Elelu explained that the laboratory would assist in the detection, diagnosis, and surveillance of diseases, and will thereby help in controlling their spread.
