KWEPA warns traders as market sanitation exercise uncovers violations

Date:

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has reiterated its commitment to environmental hygiene as it continued its weekly Thursday Market Sanitation exercise in Ilorin, warning traders over poor compliance.

Led by the Agency’s General Manager, Hon. Jide Aina, KWEPA officials conducted a routine inspection at Mandate Market, Adewole, Ilorin, to assess traders’ adherence to sanitation regulations.

The inspection revealed widespread non-compliance, including dirty surroundings, improper waste disposal in drainage channels, and encroachment on designated market spaces. Several shops were sealed over environmental violations.

Expressing dissatisfaction, Hon. Aina issued a stern warning to traders, stating that the Agency would no longer tolerate practices that pose risks to public health or environmental safety. He directed immediate action to rectify the observed infractions.

“The Agency will enforce all environmental laws without compromise. Traders must ensure that market cleanliness becomes a collective responsibility,” he said.

Also present during the exercise was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Hon. Muhammad Muazu, who praised KWEPA’s efforts and urged market users to take personal responsibility for maintaining sanitary conditions.

The Agency reminded all market stakeholders that the Thursday sanitation exercise holds weekly between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., during which no commercial activity is permitted. Traders are required to clean their premises and cooperate with environmental officers.

KWEPA reiterated its mission to build a cleaner, safer, and healthier Kwara State through sustained public sanitation campaigns and enforcement.
