Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face defending champions South Africa in a highly anticipated Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final today at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
Nine-time champions Nigeria boast a dominant head-to-head record against Banyana Banyana, winning eight of their 11 previous WAFCON meetings. However, South Africa’s 2022 victory over Nigeria in the group stage — en route to lifting their maiden title — has added intensity to the growing rivalry.
Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu acknowledged South Africa’s evolution under Desiree Ellis, stating, “We are not looking at them as underdogs. They took the crown from us, and we want to do the same.”
Ellis, meanwhile, emphasized her team’s readiness: “It’s like a derby. Players know the strength of Nigeria. No extra motivation is needed.”
Both coaches enter the match without formal contracts but have guided their teams effectively. Nigeria have scored nine goals in four matches, while South Africa reached the semi-finals after a penalty shootout win over Senegal.
This clash also revives tensions from Nigeria’s narrow Olympic qualifier win over South Africa earlier this year. The victor will secure a spot in the WAFCON final on Sunday and move closer to claiming continental glory.
