EFCC convicts nine for cybercrime in Ilorin, recovers millions

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Command, has secured the conviction of nine individuals involved in various cybercrime-related offences, including impersonation, conspiracy, and unlawful possession of criminal proceeds.

The convicts — Otitoju Moses Sesan, Ayodele Joseph Daisi, Adeoye Joseph, Abubakar Aliyu Abdulmalik, Emeka Oluwatobi Achi, Isaac Babalola Oluwafemi, Afolabi Faith Olatoye, Zubeiru Zubeiru Junior, and Abdulkadir Taofeek — were tried before Justices Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court and Justices Haleema Saleeman and Sulaiman Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court, all sitting in Ilorin.

Sesan, a 31-year-old gospel musician, was arraigned alongside Daisi, Joseph, and Abdulmalik. He was accused of retaining N8.4 million in his UBA account as proceeds of criminal activity. The charge was brought under Section 17 of the EFCC Act, 2004.

The court sentenced Daisi and Joseph to eight months in prison without the option of a fine. Daisi forfeited a Techno 19 mobile phone and N243,750, while Joseph surrendered $220 and two smartphones. Abdulmalik received a six-month sentence and forfeited his iPhone 16 and Samsung S10.

Achi, Oluwafemi, and Olatoye were each sentenced to six months imprisonment with a N100,000 fine option. Achi was also ordered to refund N3.35 million and must report biweekly to the EFCC, accompanied by his parents, until full payment is made.

Taofeek was sentenced to three years in prison with an option of a N500,000 fine. He forfeited N800,000 and two phones. Zubeiru Junior was sentenced to 15 months or a N350,000 fine and forfeited an iPhone XR and $325.

EFCC prosecutors, including Aliyu Adebayo, Sesan Ola, Rashidat Alao, and Mustapha Kaigama, presented confessional statements, devices, and financial records to support the convictions.
