AFCON: Nigeria Hold Attacking Edge, Says French Coach

Date:

French coach Julien Mett has praised Super Eagles forward Akor Adams for his impact at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the Nigerian striker as one of the tournament’s standout performers.

Mett also tipped Nigeria as favourites ahead of their semi-final clash against hosts Morocco, scheduled for Wednesday night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Adams has been directly involved in four goals at AFCON 2025, a tally surpassed by only four players: Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman (seven), Victor Osimhen (six), and Morocco’s Brahim Diaz and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who both have five.

The Sevilla forward has been particularly influential in the knockout stages, scoring in Nigeria’s emphatic win over Mozambique and finding the net again in the quarter-final victory against Algeria.

Speaking in comments reported by Moroccan outlet Elbotola, Mett highlighted Nigeria’s attacking depth as a key advantage over Morocco. “Nigeria are the strongest in attack. They have more weapons going forward, especially Lookman and Osimhen,” he said.

He added that the Super Eagles’ strength also lies in their options from the bench. “You can bring on players like Chukwueze, and Akor Adams has been a surprise in this tournament,” Mett said.

By contrast, Mett noted that Morocco rely heavily on Brahim Diaz for goals, questioning their cutting edge when the midfielder is substituted. “When he comes off, you start wondering who will finish the chances for Morocco,” he said.

The French coach said Morocco’s approach is built around sustained possession high up the pitch, but believes Nigeria’s variety in attack gives them the edge. The Super Eagles are expected to arrive in Rabat on Monday ahead of the semi-final encounter.
