Global Oil Fears Rise as US–Iran Clash Over Strait of Hormuz Escalates

Date:

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz intensifies, with Iran effectively blocking the vital oil route and the United States issuing a 48-hour ultimatum. Donald Trump warned that Iran’s energy facilities could be “obliterated” if the channel is not reopened, while Tehran threatened to retaliate by destroying US-linked energy infrastructure across the region. The deadline expires today, raising fears of imminent military escalation.

The crisis deepened after Iranian missile strikes hit southern Israeli towns, including Dimona and Arad, injuring more than 160 people in one of the most severe attacks since the conflict began. In response, Benjamin Netanyahu vowed retaliation “on all fronts,” signaling a potential widening of the war beyond current battle lines.

Iran has framed its blockade as a strategic move, restricting access to vessels linked to countries involved in attacks against it, while warning it could completely shut the strait if its infrastructure is targeted. Iranian officials also threatened to strike energy, desalination, and critical infrastructure across the Gulf and beyond, suggesting a broader “target bank” that could be activated within hours if hostilities escalate further.

The standoff has already rattled global markets, with Brent crude prices surging above $105 per barrel due to disruptions in a route that carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply. Analysts warn that prolonged conflict or a full closure of the strait could trigger sustained high oil prices, inflation, and significant economic fallout worldwide.

Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over attacks near nuclear-related facilities, including Iran’s Natanz site and Israel’s Dimona complex. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that such strikes pose serious risks to public health and environmental safety, urging all parties to exercise restraint to avoid a potential nuclear incident as the conflict enters what officials describe as a “perilous stage.”
