Nigerian Union Demands Probe Into Death of Citizen After Alleged Arrest in South Africa

Date:

Grief and anger have followed the death of a Nigerian man, Mr. Ekpenyong Andrew, who reportedly died after being arrested by Tshwane Metro Police officers in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, saying the incident has left his family and the Nigerian community in deep distress.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NUSA President Smart Nwobi and National Publicity Secretary Akindele Olunloyo described the case as disturbing and raised questions over the events leading to Andrew’s death.

According to the union, Andrew, a 35-year-old motor mechanic and father of five, was arrested on Sunday, April 19, in the Booysens area of Pretoria while returning home from work.

His partner, Ms. Kuma Kaku, reportedly said police officers had earlier visited their residence the same day in search of drugs but found nothing incriminating.

NUSA stated that Andrew’s body was later discovered at the Pretoria Central Morgue the following day, under circumstances that have prompted demands for clarity and accountability.

A case has been opened at the Hercules SAPS Police Station (CAS 224/04/2026), and an investigating officer has been assigned to the matter.

The union is demanding the release of an autopsy report and a full explanation of the cause of death, insisting that due process must be followed and accountability ensured.

NUSA also said it had notified the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and will engage both Nigerian and South African authorities as investigations continue, while urging Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm.
