BREAKING: Six Alleged Coup Plotters Set for Court Appearance as FG Files Charges

Date:

Six suspected coup plotters are set to be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja at noon on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation confirmed the development, marking the formal commencement of legal proceedings against the accused.

The Federal Government has charged the suspects with offences including treason, terrorism, failure to disclose security intelligence, and money laundering linked to terrorism financing. According to the charge, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2025 to wage war against the Nigerian state and overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

Among those listed in the charge are retired Major General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani. A former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, was also mentioned but is reportedly at large.

The prosecution further alleged that the suspects shared over N71 million among themselves to fund terrorist activities. The charges, filed under number FHC/ABJ/CR/206/2026 and signed by Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, outline multiple counts tied to the alleged plot.

Additionally, the government accused the defendants of failing to report prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others. They were said to have neither alerted authorities nor taken reasonable steps to prevent the alleged offences.
