President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled the new naira notes.

Buhari unveiled the new currency notes on Wednesday morning before the federal executive council (FEC) meeting at the state house, Abuja.

The new notes presented to the public are the 1000, 500 and 200 naira notes.

Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was in attendance during the unveiling ceremony.

Present at the ceremony were Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation, Ibrahim Gambari, chief of staff to the president, and Folashade Yemi-Esan, head of civil service of the federation.

In his brief remarks, the CBN governor said the introduction of new notes was a deliberate step by government to check corruption and counterfeiting of the notes.

Emefiele had announced the shifting of the date on Tuesday at a media briefing to mark the end of the 288th Monetary Policy Committee meeting and the last in 2022, urged those in possession of the old notes to hurriedly deposit them at the nearest bank branch.

He added that, the naira notes currently in use will remain as legal tenders till 31st January, 2023
