KWHA invites revenue boss over Certificate of Origin

The Kwara House of Assembly on Thursday summoned the Chairman of Kwara Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS), Dr. Muritala Awodun, for clarification on the status of old version of local government certificate of origin.

The House issued the summon in its resolutions following the adoption of a motion titled “Contradictions arising from issuance of certificate of local government certificate of origin”.

The motion which enjoyed the support of all Members was moved by Abdulrafiu Abdulrahman (APC, Ilorin North West constituency)

The Chief Revenue Collector for the state is expected to first appear before the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftancy Affairs and Community Development.

Abdulrahman in his submission noted that there has been high rate of abuse of Kwara local government certificate of origin by non-indigenes thereby limiting the chances of Kwarans in accessing great opportunities.

He added that the KWIRS was given the cabinet responsibility to administer the certificate to prospective citizens at a bearable cost and not only to increase revenue but also to checkmate the scam in the issuance of the certificates,

The Legislator described the centralization of the production of uniform certificate for all 16 local governments as a welcome development.

He expressed concerned that the KWIRS seems to give the revenue generating aspect a greater premium than verifying the authenticity of the bearers of the certificates

Abdulrahman condemned the current advocacy on media and tertiary institutions on the need for all Kwarans with the old version of certificate to obtain new ones.

He noted that the revenue collection body seems derailing from the main objectives of issuance and verification of the certificate of origin.

He particularly frowned at the act of KWIRS in writing to the authority of the University of Ilorin requesting them to demand for new state of origin certificate from the new and returning students

While describing the act as a selective justice, Abdulrahman called on the House to wade into the matter.

ROYAL NEWS reports that some of the members who contributed to the debate said the power of issuance and invalidity or otherwise of local government origin was vested on the local government council.

They however expressed that the power arrogated to the KWIRS does not belong to it and called for caution on its activities.

The lawmakers particularly condemned the cancellation of admission of new students of the University of Ilorin as requested by the KWIRS, describing the directive as a command that was not in conformity with the present democratic dispensation.

Reading the resolution of the House, the Deputy Speaker, Mathew Okedare direct the KWIRS to a matter of urgency suspend the announcement/advocacy on media and tertiary institutions

The House also directed the KWIRS to retrieve letter sent to the University of Ilorin and other institutions on presentation of new certificate of origin by new and returning Students.

Doctor steals patient’s kidney in Adamawa

A medical doctor, Hassan Yakubu in an hospital in Adamawa state has been arrested following reports that he was among those who removed the kidney of a 24 year old patient in the hospital.

The patient, Isa Hamma is said to be in a life threatening condition as he have been constantly having Lapses since the removal of his kidney.

On the cause of investigation, it was discovered that the doctor, Yakubu Hassan is an uncle to the victim.

Relating what transpired, a relative to the victim, Hamman Seyo recounted what he knows about the pathetic situation of the victim.

He said: “the victim’s uncle, Yakubu, who treated Isa, at his Jimeta Clinic, for stomach complications, ended up operating the victim on July 8 but allegedly removed his kidney in the process. Three days after the operation, Isa could not urinate.

The complications further degenerated with the face and legs of the victim becoming swollen which prompted the family to return to the doctor who later referred them to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe. it was at the Gombe hospital that medical officials working with the Federal Medical Center told them that Isa’s kidney had been removed.

Group eulogize Sultan as he turns 10yrs on throne

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has been commended for his purposeful leadership as he turned 10 years on the throne.

In a statement signed on Thursday by the National Coordinator of the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, (MMWGN), Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the monarch was described as a ‘Pride of Muslim Ummah’.

According to the statement, “In Nigeria today, the nation and the citizens are under the leadership of those who are concerned solely about themselves but pretends to serve the people but Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has scaled-up the level of traditional leadership by being selfless, committed, dedicated and responsive to yearnings of the people by promoting unity, peace and stability in the country.

“In his attempt to promote religious tolerance, he has from time to time organized and promoted inter-religious dialogue with a view to educate the people that though, we are diverse in terms of religious beliefs, we are from only one God; who enjoins us to be our brothers’ keepers.”

The group therefore prayed for the Sultan as he turned 10 years on the throne wishing him more successful reign for the peace and development of the nation, Africa continent and world at large.

Osun govt reads riot against open defecation

Osun State government has reiterated commitment towards having zero tolerance for open defecation not only at the rural communities but across the State through series of sensitisations and enlightenment’s crusades.

The state’s Programme Manager, Rural Water Enviromental Sanitation Agency (RUWESA), Alhaji Posi Adiatu, stated this on Thursday while declaring open a one day workshop for members of the State Task Group on Sanitation (STGS) held at Timsed and Resort, Ijebu-Jesa in Osun State.

The Programme Manager who was represented by the Director, Sanitation and Hygiene in the RUWESA, Mr. Moyinoluwa Segun, said the workshop was aimed at equipping participants with needed skills and knowledge on community led total sanitation.

Adiatu, said that the seminar would further update the knowledge of STGS members on the new approach to ODF scarification.

He maintained that the workshop would also assist the STGS members in adopting a realistic approach towards putting an end to open defecation and work assiduously towards sustainable environment in Osun State at large.

The Osun RUWESA further used the medium to commend the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola for his concern towards total eradication of open defecation in the state and called on other states governors in the country to emulate him.

“Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has been contributing in no measure to the crusade of having zero tolerance for open defecation and in order to avert epidemic diseases in our various communities in the state”, Adiatu added.

He added further that efforts have also commenced towards having toilets in all the public places in the state.

While speaking at the event, the UNICEF Wash Consultant for the State, the Odo-Otin and Ayedaade, WASH consultants, Mr Olowole Modekai, Mrs Rebecca Akinduro and Mrs. Omopariola Abidemi, respectively said the training would further educate the STGS members on the need to sensitize people on the benefits accrued to dangers inherent in open defecation.

ROYAL NEWS reports that some of the participants at the workshop includes, Head of Water and Sanitation in Ayedaade local government Area of the state, Mr. Olaoye Ayobami, Mr.Wasiu Ajadosu of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mrs. Odelola Ibidun A of RUWESA and Mr. Adepoju Olusola of the State Ministry of Information and Strategy among others.

Church usher gets N1m bail for defiling 6yr-old girl

A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Thursday slammed a one million naira bail on a 33-year-old man, Roland Olise, for alleged defilement of a six-year-old girl in a church in Lagos.

Olise, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of defilement.

The Chief Magistrate, Ipaye Nwachukwu, ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.

Nwachukwu said one of the surety must be a property owner in Lagos State, while the other must be a civil servant on grade level 14.

She said the sureties must provide evidence of tax payments to the government, and adjourned the case till January 19, 2017 for mention.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence at a church at Ajah-Lekki Area in Lagos at about 6.00 p.m on Oct. 21.

Osayande said the accused, who was a church worker, was in church and he saw the six-year-old girl passing and he called her into the church where there wasn’t any body around and defiled her.
‎The offence contravened Sections 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011

‘Mysterious Amala’ kills family of 6 in Kogi

Six people , including a mother, three of her children and two of their neighbours on Tuesday lost their lives in Ogaminana area of Okene in Kogi after eating a meal made from cassava flour.

The Public Relations Officer of Adavi Local Government, Abdulhamid Salahudeen, told journalists on phone that three of the victims died on Tuesday at the Okene General Hospital while the woman and two of her children had earlier died on Monday in their house.

He said that the woman died alongside three of her children, two sons and a daughter

According to him, two male children of her neighbour that partook in the meal also died .

He put the ages of the five dead children at between 9 and 15 years.

Mr. Salaudeen said that the mother had in the evening of Sunday, October 30 brought the cassava flour (white Amala) from her farmland at Ohuepe village.

He said that the woman prepared a dinner from the yam flour for the family and extended the food to her neighbour.

The officer said the victims later went to bed but developed severe stomach pain over the night which later resulted in the death of the woman and two of her children.

He said that neighbours who sensed that the sudden deaths might be due to the cassava flour dinner quickly rushed the remaining three children that partook in the eating to Okene General Hospital where they died on Tuesday.

Mr. Salaudeen said that the authority of the local government believed that the cassava flour was poisoned and had informed the police for appropriate action.

A senior nursing officer at the Okene General Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death of the three victims at the hospital on Tuesday .

The nurse said that the victims were brought in late Monday afternoon.

Erisco shutdown factory in Nigeria, relocates to China

e said it weeks back that if things continue the way they were going, he would be forced to leave his country, Nigeria, and relocate his Multi-Millions Dollars business to China. Sadly, he has done it. Erisco Foods Limited has announced the shutdown of its tomato manufacturing business in Nigeria, citing unfavourable operating climate which has escalated operational costs in recent months.

President/CEO of Erisco Foods Limited, Chief Eric Umeofia, who addressed a press conference in Lagos said the company had concluded plans to relocate the manufacturing aspect of the business to China from where finished products would be imported and sold to consumers in Nigeria.

He said the decision to shut down the Nigerian manufacturing plant was taken after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum given by the management to Government to compel the CBN to make available enough foreign exchange (forex) to assist in the imports of raw materials as well as the requisite equipment needed to keep the manufacturing plants running and also profitable.

The company had also demanded that the Federal Government compel regulatory agencies like NAFDAC, SON, and the Federal Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Investment to end the imports and dumping of sub-standard tomato paste in the country.

His words: “As from November 1, 2016, we have commenced the winding down of our tomato manufacturing business in Nigeria and it’s a decision that we have taken as the 30 days ultimatum has expired without our terms being met. We are moving the factory to China from where we will manufacture and bring back to Nigeria while also selling to other over seas clients.

“It pays us that way as a business because in recent months, our continuous operation in Nigeria has resulted in a loss of over N3.6billion investments.

“Because of the huge machines we have to move out, winding down will last us about nine months as we plan to first exhaust the existing raw materials we have before moving our equipment out to China.

“It’s unfortunate that out of a workforce of about 2,000 Nigerians that we have, we will be dis-engaging about 1,500 of these workers as we need just about 40 staff to keep the Nigerian company running since what we will now be doing is just restricted to marketing and sales of imported products from our China plant. My business has been deliberately frustrated by the way the CBN has managed forex bidding and allocation.

“They won’t give us forex to import machinery, machine spare parts and raw materials for processing Nigerian fresh tomatoes into paste in our Lagos factory and they won’t give us approval to use our own money (about $460,000) generated from our foreign operations to import our raw materials. They won’t also check dumping because of the powerful nature of the import cabals.

“This decision is therefore final and there is no going back on it; nothing will make us to come back even in the future because we have found out that we can import tomato paste into Nigeria and still make huge profits,” he added.

Most of those to be employed in the now factory would be from China. More job loss for Nigerians.

see FRSC officer who slap a motorist

There was drama yesterday as a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer slapped a motorist for advising him on civility.
Our reporter, who witnessed the incident, observed that the motorist was riding a Ford Escape SUV with registration number RSH 612HX and was close to the service lane when he saw an officer of the FRSC jump in front of another vehicle in the traffic jam by LEA Primary School, Nyanya.

The motorist, who declined to give his name, asked the FRSC officer to approach the driver of the vehicle he was trying to arrest in a more civilised way. The officer got angry, left that vehicle and got over to the driver of the Ford and slapped him after a hot exchange of words.
City News observed that close to a dozen FRSC officers were on routine stop and search duty around the Nyanya pedestrian bridge on the Keffi-Abuja expressway and they also descended on the motorist.
They forced him to park at Forte Oil service station where they manhandled him and threatened to call the military if he refused to follow them to their office.
When our reporter approached the most senior officer in the team to comment, he said he did not know the exact problem but he alleged that a brother of the Ford driver was trying to fight them.
The Unit Commander of the FRSC in Nyanya, Mr Mike Arinze Agu, could not reply to a text message our reporter sent to his mobile phone number requesting for comments on the incident.

A Nigerian Student Built A Solar-Powered Keke For His Final Year Project

When a Nigerian mother asks if your classmate has two heads, Ekomobong Finbarr is that classmate they are talking about. Finbarr, an undergraduate student of Electrical-Electronics Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, built a solar-powered keke napep for his final year project.

The keke has no engine but runs with a battery and solar panels arranged on its roof. His elder brother, Aniekeme Finbarr Ukpong, said on Facebook that the keke can travel an impressive 11km without needing a recharge.

“Over the past few weeks, he has painstakingly produced and defended this solar-powered tricycle.

His lecturers were completely stunned that he could pull this through.”

When you remember that this is just for his final year project, it is clear that Finbarr is only just getting started.

Security man in court for stealing N371,000

An internal security officer attached to Skye Bank Plc yesterday was arraigned at the Igbosere Magistrate Court for allegedly carting away a customer’s N371,000.

The accused, Prince Solomon Udoh who is arraigned before Magistrate O. A Olagbende is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing contrary to Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The prosecutor, Corporal Friday Mameh informed the court that Udoh committed the offences at 4:30pm on August 2, inside the banking hall of Skye Bank PLC, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

He said the customer, Musa Dayyabu, forgot a black polythene bag containing his phone, diary and a cash sum of N371,000 on a customer’s chair in the bank.

The court heard that Udoh found the bag and put it in his desk drawer but, contrary to the bank’s protocol, failed to inform his supervisor of the find.

Mameh said that the customer called the Business Services Manager of the branch on the evening of the 2nd of August at about 6:09pm to enquire about his bag.

“The accused denied seeing the bag and its contents and even joined the BSM and other officials of the bank in searching for it. He repeated his denial when the customer arrived later.

“But the customer insisted that it was in the banking hall that he forgot the cash, adding that the cash was in N50, N100, N200 and N500 notes,” Mameh added.

He said when the Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) recording for that evening was checked, it showed the accused picking a black polythene bag from the same seat where the customer sat and forgot the bag.

“Confronted with the video, the accused said the bag was his and contained his Golden Morn beverage and milk, but the following day when more of his superiors questioned him, he changed his story to say the bag belonged to a customer but only contained a phone and diary,” Mameh alleged.
