A High Court in Gusau, Zamfara State, has issued an interim order restraining Bashar Aliyu from identifying or acting as the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly.

Justice Muhammad Gusau granted the order following a suit filed by the Zamfara State House of Assembly on June 23, 2025, which challenged what it described as an illegal move by some individuals to usurp the Assembly’s leadership.

In his ruling, Justice Gusau specifically barred Aliyu and anyone acting on his behalf from performing any functions or duties associated with the office of the Speaker.

“He is hereby restrained in the interim from parading himself as the Speaker of the Applicant or assuming the functions of the Speaker of the Applicant, pending the hearing and determination of Motion No. ZMS/GS/M.228/2025,” the court ruled.

The order also affects eight other individuals, listed as the 2nd to 9th respondents, prohibiting them from holding meetings or making decisions aimed at endorsing or installing an alternative leadership structure in the Assembly.

Justice Gusau noted that the application brought by the Assembly had merit and granted it as requested.

The court’s decision effectively halts any parallel claims to the Assembly’s leadership until the motion is heard and determined.

No date has been announced for the hearing of the substantive motion.
